Gender identity is one's view of themselves being a man or a woman, and It seems to me that gender identity plays a big roll in a lot of big life choices. Like what jobs we want to go into or who to marry. Sometimes our identity and career choice is influenced more by how others see gender than how we personally see gender.
Growing up you might remember thinking in general that boys were suppose to play with toy cars and girls where suppose to play with Barbie's or the saying, "run like a girl." because that's definitely the basic stereotype that was first made up and that a lot of young people see and hear about. However using these stereotypes is quite demeaning. It should be okay for a little girl to play with a toy car just like it should be okay for a little boy to play with a Barbie. Gender stereotypes shouldn't play a roll in what toy you want to play with as a child much less what career you want to go into as an adult.
Throughout history different genders were expected to played different roles. Woman would cook and watch their children and men would work and go to war. Although times have changes dramatically, they're are still many individuals that view gender roles as still existing, and I believe that the way people view and label individuals has an effect on how we view ourselves. Any gender should be able to do any job as well as be able to view themselves however they want.

I agree that gender stereotypes and expectations are very close minded in today's society and should be expanded. I think the example you used with the Barbie is one of the most commonly seen/talked about. A lot of parents have certain ideas/images for what they want their child to be, and they'll see them taking interest in non-typical hobbies as a red flag. It's 2017 so it shouldn't matter if your interests are deemed "acceptable" for your gender, there are much bigger problems to worry about.
ReplyDeletei agree that the way people see you as an individual has to do with the way we view are self's, Because people now and days just want to fit in so they will sometimes listen to what people thing about them and try and change them self's just so they fit into other peoples standers of how i should make my self look just so i don't have to deal with people criticizing me and how i act. beauty was created just to make people buy products we don't need.
ReplyDeleteI believe that anyone should be able to do anything they want to in life without their gender being a major influence on those choices. People shouldn't be focusing on the gender of a potential employee but more on their abilities on doing the job. I think people should be encouraging their children to play with whatever toy they want and not worry about what "gender" it's suppose to be for.
